savory shortbreads with parmesan, fennel and sea salt.

Savory cookies are totally my new favorite way to cookie.

Totes.

In fact I baked up this recipe to bring to new neighbors who had moved in next door…except that, well, they sort of disappeared in the time that it took me to throw on some lipstick and get them wrapped up pretty.  I had the best of intentions.  Really. Read more

strawberry basil bruschetta.

If I could have a best foodie friend (BFF), it would be goat cheese.  I’ve been known to eat it at every meal, scrambling it into my morning eggs, tossing a little in a chicken salad  for lunch, or throwing some on top of an arugula pizza for dinner.  I’ll never get tired of goat cheese.   This is a friendship that has stood the test of time. coffee s’mores pie.

Yes indeedy.

This here’s a sophisticated take on the classic campfire recipe.  A touch of chocolate in the graham cracker crust, hints of coffee in a rich ganache, all topped with toasted meringue.  You won’t be disappointed, I promise…unless you simply can’t stand coffee or chocolate.  In that case, I’ll just say you’re missing out and then direct you to take a look at the many other dessert recipes I’ve shared. shrimp pizza with arugula pesto and smoked mozzarella.

My love for pizza has been well documented.

There was the goat cheese and roasted garlic pizza with arugula, this prosciutto and caramelized onion pizza, and a bacon and egg breakfast pizza.  I’m beginning to realize the common denominator in all the pizzas I’ve created this last year is that the tomato sauce is completely missing, replaced instead by olive oil, roasted garlic, or mascarpone cheese.  Does that make me a pizza snob?  Anti-traditional? sea salt honey almond butter.

It’s kind of an unhealthy obsession, this eating well on a budget thing.

Sometimes I think I’m going a little overboard, calculating my running totals as I go through the grocery stores…finding myself totally ecstatic when I find some great deal on, I don’t know, oats…or stretching us through a day or two just to make it to the best day of the week to get the most deals.  Sorry, Andrew, if you’re still hungry you can have a bowl of frozen peas or some canned tuna.

But today I’m thrilled to share with you a do-it-yourself recipe that is both functional and totally fabulous!  One that you and your kids will absolutely adore, and that’s so simple to make! Read more

chocolate chip toffee chunk bars.

Well…

Don’t hate me.

You see, I couldn’t help myself.  I passed the chocolate-covered english toffee bin at Sprouts and felt a sudden burst of inspiration.  I think that’s what happens when you go grocery shopping without children.  Oh Lord help me when I send them off to school. Read more

fresh fruit sugar cookie crisp.

Oh my.

Why haven’t we thought of this before?  A  sugar cookie topping for a fruit crisp?!

Emma was pretty excited to give it a go… Read more

black pepper shortcake with balsamic strawberry whipped cream.

This whole thing’s my husband’s fault.

About 10 months ago Andrew talked me into starting a food blog so that I could tell the world about how I cook well on a budget.  Have you ever been convinced by someone to do something, but then you were so glad you did it?  Me too.  I love connecting with people, including those I’ve never met, over food.

Except here’s the thing:  I sorta still don’t get what I’m doing.  Don’t tell anyone, please. Read more

pear, bacon and gorgonzola flatbread.

This recipe was a grand experiment.

My hypothesis was it would be fabulous, given the control group ingredients – pear, bacon, gorgonzola, and mascarpone cheeses.

I was, indeed, correct. Read more

caramelized onion and gorgonzola tart, and a baby shower!

Over the weekend I had the privilege of hosting a baby shower brunch honoring my dear friend and college roommate Caitlin.  Caitlin is planning on a tangerine and pink nursery (so adorable) for her baby girl Josslyn (oh the name!…even more adorable) so we wove those colors into the shower and it turned out so beautifully! I thought you might enjoy a few pics. Read more
